Most obnoxious advertising campaign ever

3.09.09 Most obnoxious advertising campaign ever

I am sick of seeing these billboards everywhere. Apparently, the company is selling some snake-oil product which is really questionable in it’s effectiveness.

They are doing a roaring trade, but the problem is, many men who feel cheated by this, don’t say anything because they’re too embarrassed.

you can read more about it here.

Combination Laksa

29.8.09 Combination Laksa

mmmm, malaysian curry laksa.

I was on facebook this morning and my friend in brisbane, Ron, shouted out that he was loving his laksa. a few people stuck over in the UK lamented on how they just can’t find a good laksa in london.

it got me in the mood for a laksa, so i sauntered on down to the sussex centre foodhall in chinatown this afternoon to get my fix. (combination means they throw in pork, beef, chicken, scallops, squid, fish and tofu).

if there are any laksa aficionados out there in london, can you help guide these poor souls in the right direction by posting a short review here in the comments?

many thanks, on their behalf.

stuck in traffic again…

28.9.09 stuck in traffic again...

firstly, i would like to thank the wonderful ruling ALP government of NSW for allowing me to take this photo – because, if it was not for them, i would never be able to have captured it. if we had good transport infrastructure, i would never have been able to take this shot. i would be doing 60 km/ph, instead of 0 km/ph.

this photo was taken out of a car window, in the sydney harbour tunnel, late on an average friday afternoon peak hour (6:24 pm), with a shutter-speed of 1/15 of a second.

for those of you who aren’t down with shutter speeds – that means i was not going anywhere too fast – in fact, i was stationary.

i also have nice clean shots of emergency exits no’s. 11 to 16. i could have had more shots of the other ones, but i thought i had taken enough photos by that time.

i give my personal thanks to the ALP powerbrokers (tripodi, della bosca, sartor et al), and my good mate Bob Carr for running the city that i love so much, into the ground. No thanks to Rees or Iemma, who are purely shadow puppets placed by the others named. Good work boys – i am glad that you and all your developer and banker mates have lined your pockets with gold,  under the table, at the expense of the future and well-being of a city of over 4 million people.

shame on you kevin rudd for towing the party line and not pulling this mafioso into line.

i know there are not many options out there at the moment, but PLEASE DON’T ANYONE vote these corrupt pricks and their dodgey mates into office for at least 10 years. Educate yourselves on preferential voting.

If there are 60 boxes on your ballot form, mark them all. It may take an extra few minutes, but that way, your vote for the greens will not become a vote for labor, for example.  Don’t let these criminals get your vote. if you agree with any of the above and are a facebook user, please join this group.

26.8.09 i like it

i have probably walked by this building a million times in the past before and have never noticed it.

that’s something i like about having to produce a photo a day. it makes me re-discover things, because i have to.

any architects out there who can help me on this one? is it a 60′s thing? how much of it is influenced by the international style? do you see any basic Ken Shuttleworth in this? feedback appreciated…

PC or not PC? that is the question.

23.8.09 PC or not PC? that is the question.

I am down in chinatown quite a lot. i see these ads place all the time – some of them even advertise free rice as part of the rental deal (seriously!).

what got me thinking is this. obviously the advertisement in yellow is in cantonese or mandarin(sorry i can’t tell the difference).

what if i posted a sign around town saying “room for rent  – commonwealth st, surry hills, $160 a week, chinese need not apply”

do you think that would wash? do you think some white middle-class idealist would be on my case? probably. do you think that same ‘activist’ would phone the guy who put up the yellow advetisement and give him the same treatment? probably not.

i am all for respect and equality, but i DO believe that PC is an absolute cop-out and a huge load of devisive crap – i think that it is something that works against itself. I believe that with all its good intentions PC divides rather than joins communities.

i have no probs with the ad in the photo at all, my only prob is that if i posted an ad which said the same thing (if you speak my language then you are welcome to apply, if not, then forget your chances), i would probably be hauled through some kind of tribunal.

Death to PC i say, and then we might all actually get along.

i’m HOT – so go stick it where it hurts!

22.09.09 im HOT so go stick it where it hurts!

there are some days that i walk down the street and think -’hey, i really LOVE living where i live’.  for me, today was one of those days. apart from the usual market day, today was a little bit special around here. as part of the fashion week hooplas, there was a street closure and mini-festival on William Street to promote local business.

may i introduce to you,  ‘Lady Elektra’… click here for a baby photo of her.

but i must tread carefully, with arms and shoulders like that, i’m sure she may well punch the crap out of me.

ramshackle random

21.08.09 ramshackle random

taken on the corner of President Ave and The Grand Parade, Brighton le Sands.

this goes back to the Croissant Show post. i understand that businesses, and people in general, are doing it tough these days. BUT what baffles me is why do people allow their business to look like crap? Seriously, i understand that money is tight, but it really does not cost much to go to the local hardware store, get some mates around with some tools, and make your shop more presentable. It will probably do your business some good – it will certainly improve the look and feel of your neighbourhood too.

with such a prominent corner position and on 2 such grand sounding streets, if i lived around here, i would be seriously pissed off about this.

yes, back at the airport again. in case you are wondering, home is not far from the airport and i often drive past it.

i have never flown with aerolineas argentinas, but from all reports, i don’t envy the passengers for their flight experience, i do however, envy them for their destination.

found in a backstreet of Petersham.

why would anyone decide to spray this onto a wall? did they think it out, or was it a spur of the moment thing?

i think it was thought out, only because there is no other tag or throw-up with the same paint on the same wall.

cracks me up that someone commented on it as well. BTW – nice tag ‘Relms’.

the most out-dated shop in the world?

14.8.09 the most out dated shop in the world?

i think, and i do say “think” that “croissant Show” was a franchise back in the 80′s. I remember seeing heaps of them around when i was a kid, but have totally forgotten about it until i saw this fine example when, once again, i was stuck in Sydney traffic.

I wonder if the guy in the shop is actually a customer, or one of the owners friends?

In Australia, the format of telephone numbers was changed at least ten years ago. any Sydney number has a 9 as a prefix since then. these guys have had over 10 YEARS to sort that out on their signage!

i certainly will not be in a rush to buy any croissants from this show, that’s for sure.

amazing new photographic evidence of UFOs in Australia

13.8.09 amazing new photographic evidence of UFOs in Australia

Well, it’s actually just a shot of this at night.

Just so that I don’t ruffle too many feathers with a misleading title, today i read an article in the Sydney Morning Herald about a guy in the Northern Territory who has been filming strange goings on in the sky. He plans to make the Top End into a tourist attraction that beats the pants off Roswell in the US.  Good luck to him, i say..

You can check his videos out at www.UFOterritory.com.au

this is another photo from the amazing series.

i’m not a horsie person, but…

12.8.09 im not a horsie person, but...

i just love coming down to the stables.  after a while, you get to know the horses and their various temperaments, characters and quirks.

the place has such a peaceful ambience to it. it is usually dead quiet, except for the sound of horses conversing and the fluttering of the birds who nest at the stables. and that horse smell.

i do feel for these animals though. they are locked up in their tiny stalls all day and are taken out twice each day. at best, they get a trot, but never a good canter.  these animals are made to run. in my mind, it is a bit like keeping a large dog in an apartment, where it sits all day waiting for the owner to get back from work, when it is taken  down to the park for a walk on its leash.

the tunnel from irreversible

10.8.09 the tunnel from irreversible

I walk through this tunnel under the railway lines several times a week. i love it when I hear the trains rumbling above me and the ceiling, the walls and the floor vibrate – the place has real atmosphere.

What I don’t like about it, is that even though it looks quite different, it reminds me constantly of one of the most intense and disturbing scenes i have seen in film.

I have seen plenty of films, including plenty of disturbing films, but when i know that the mother of my child is regularly walking through a tunnel that reminds me of THAT scene in the Gaspar Noe flick – ‘Irreversible’, i just can’t shake that feeling. here is a trailer for the film – en espanol:

Maybe it’s time that i started sticking to mindless Hollywood blockbusters  (Well actually, maybe not).

BTW, i found it to be an amazing film anyway and one that had to be watched at least twice to be fully appreciated – even though i went and made a cup of tea in another room while THAT tunnel scene played out (once was enough, thank you very much).

Although it does star Arnie (why and HOW does he hold Governorship?????), Total Recall was another crazy kind of backwards film that is best seeing more than once.

If you want to know a little history of Arnold Schwarzenegger, watch this clip below and you will know what cumming in heaven is all about. Do you think that he is cumming now that he can ‘bose out’ as the Governator, is he still mainl-lining steroids in old age? It’s a corker:

,

It was, in my opinion, a great film – based on a book by the Sci-Fi nutcase – Philip K Dick (who also wrote the novel behind Bladerunner).

Even though this is an blog based in Australia, a Massive proportion of readers come from the US – most of those are from Cali. Can anyone PLEASE explain to me how this man was voted in to run the state that generates SO much revenue for the national economy? I really wonder how a man with zero acting skills can become an actor. Then i wonder how a steroid-nut neanderthal non-actor can run a once prosperous state in what was once the worlds largest economy could come into power. With all due respect to my Cali brothers and sisters, who voted this fucking freak into power?

I need to come back here and re-shoot at night – when there is no ‘light at the end of the tunnel’.

Free to good home

9.8.09 Free to good home

After moving house and de-junking, we had this old bike (which would have been worth a packet back in its day – CroMo frame and Scott shocks, decked out with slicks and bar-ends).

It needs a bit of a service, but anyone with basic bike mechanic skills could have brought this baby up to speed.

What to do? – Stuff around and describe it, shoot it, list it on ebay, answer 100 dumb questions and maybe sell it for 20 bucks, only to get logistical with arranging pick up times and then deal with ‘feedback’…..

- OR -

stuff around and describe it, shoot it, list it on this blog , handwrite a dodgy sign, moderate maybe a handful of comments and dump it next to the train station so that either some commuter or passer-by can ride the thing home?

I chose the latter. The bike was gone within 20 minutes. I hope the new owner is stoked with their new wheels and that i see them riding around the neighbourhood.

I hope whoever picked it up didn’t stuff around and describe it, shoot it, list it on ebay, answer 100 dumb questions and maybe sell it for 20 bucks, only to get logistical with arranging pick up times and then deal with ‘feedback’.

after the children have gone to sleep…

8.8.091 after the children have gone to sleep…

I actually went back to re-shoot a previous post, as suggested by some of the readers here, but got distracted by this scene instead.

The park was full of 16 yr olds getting pissed for someones birthday, it was all good though. Kind of like a time machine.

I come down here often, but it’s the first time i’ve been down here at night in years.  With the eye, it’s not at all creepy, but through the lens, it certainly can be – especially when shooting tungsten using daylight temperatures.

So i guess i will just have to come back and get the UFO’s another night…

the naughty chef

06.8.09 the naughty chef

this is a total non-shot, but i have seen this place down near central station often and have thought the same thing each time.

naughty chef….

what does that mean?

does he piss in my pho?

i have never eaten here before, so i can’t judge the quality of food – it could be mind-blowingly good, but is it just me who thinks that is not a great business name?

as an ex-chef myself, and having seen the antics of a few in the profession, i would much prefer a nice chef to a naughty one anytime, next question is… how many ‘nice’ chefs are out there?

if you need to be rescued today, then you really should not be near the beach at all – in fact, you should probably not be allowed to sit in the  bathtub without responsible adult supervision.

3.8.09 come fly with me

yep, back at the airport again.

After waving hello/goodbye to the passengers in this plane preparing for take-off, I took this shot. I might come back here wearing fluoro leotards, headband and bedazzled tank-top a-la-nu-skool Richard Simmons and do this for them next time:

Just an idea.

I can’t believe how close you can get to the aircraft here. So much for tight security – it’s almost laughable.

2.8.09 planting trees at sydney park

this happens every year – it’s a great idea.

the park is massive and built on an old waste dump. they are seriously foresting this park up with native trees and shrubs – hopefully we can bring more native birdlife to the city. about an hour after this shot was taken, that whole hill behind the girls was fully planted with little trees – awesome.

you can find out more about it here.

Now here is some music to plant trees to . Get Happy!
