I think most of these use big, fat LED’s wrapped in translucent plastic tubing. Am a huge fan of neon, but if you’ve ever been to Hong Kong, they love the LED signage in small shops. In fact, i would bet my bottom dollar that the proprietors of this shop are Chinese.

Nice look at neon. I remember when it first started and wasn’t much to look at in those days. It also made a terrific amount of buzzing noise.
