more industrial madness

14.01.11 more industrial madness

i’m back here again and i am facinated.

this site is massive and most of it laid down with hissing and buzzing pipes.

if you look at this pic and the one in the previous post, you will see a tangle of pipes, lights and valves.

immediately, what strikes me, is that this is old technology, at least 50 years old.

when i look at i site like this, i am amazed by it. i’m amzazed that every tangled-looking pipe, each steam-blowing valve, every outdated looking lever on site has a function and a purpose. everything was laid out in a plan.

human inginuity is an amazing thing. i’m looking at old technolgy and i am still amazed.  i remember looking at the old meadowlea margerine plant in alexandria before it closed down about two yrs ago (next to bunnings) and being amazed by the pipes and technology involved in producing manufactured foods.

with the incredible progress that research and technolgy has made, i still just wonder why it is that we still rely on coal-fired power-plants to produce our energy. i wonder, why is it that there are still 50 year old refineries making petrol for our cars. go to silverwater or kurnell to see it for yourself.

you will see trucks filling up their loads with petrol/diesel and then burning diesel to take the payload to a destination where there is no margin (unless the retailer is a major/cartel) . it just does not make sense.

this is just not right and things need to change. if you are thinking about being ‘eco-friendly’ and buying a cheap chinese electric car, it’s a nice thought – just think about where your electricity comes from. Coal.

until we generate our elctricity from clean means ( tidal, geothermic, wind, nuclear[feel free to attck me on this]), i think that anyone who drives an electric car for ‘green’ reasons is a wanker.

back to the big smoke – in a big way

12.01.11 back to the big smoke in a big way

ancient oil refinery going hell for leather in silverwater.

wow, silverwater is suffering an identity crisis. it is home to a whole heap of meriton-style developments, it’s also that little too far from public transport infrastructure.

home to a prison, a whole bunch of toxic refineries, trucking and logistics companies, an old stronghold of manufacturing for the building industry as well as waste processing. It’s also a korean ghetto. loads of korean panel beaters, mechnanics and removalist firms out here. i also believe that one of australias most respected 4×4 magazines has its hq out here as well.

interesting times ahead for silverwater – in a good way. mark my words.

farming oldtimer

24.01.11 farming oldtimer

i stumbled across this old bloke along the way and just had to ask if I could take his portrait. He was more than happy to sit for it, but he seemed a bit baffled as to why anyone would want to take his picture.

just look at that face. He looks amazing. For sure he as worked outdoors on his farm under the hot australian sun all his life and those eyes have stories to tell.

he’s probably only 36 years old…..

elvis presleys’ knocking back some tinnies on a friday arvo – parkes elvis festival 2011

07.01.11 elvis presleys knocking back some tinnies on a friday arvo parkes elvis festival 2011

a couple of local parkes boys getting into the spirit of things at the ‘elvis crashpad’ – that’s what they called it…

top lads. nothing like getting your mates together, dressing up in polyester elvis suits on a 40 degree, sun-filled day and smashing the tinnies.male bonding at its utmost.

i have a feeling the ‘real’ elvis was doing the same thing before rocked up to his vegas show this night + more than a few chemical additives – (see below).

downs syndrome elvis – parkes elvis festival 2011

06.01.11 downs syndrome elvis parkes elvis festival 2011

this champ is grooving it – great to see. he had the moves down and all.

the parkes elvis festival is one of those things that everyone must go and check out at least once. i’d rate it up there with the tammworth country music festival. in the short time i’ve been here, i have seen such an outlandish array of elvises, it is unreal.

it’s such a great thing to see so many people from all over, camping it up and having fun – pretending to be elvis for a week or just a few days.

i found that tamworth can get a little bit edgey/aggro at times. parkes has been nothing but friendly.

even though there are a lot of people out here who take the elvis thing very seriously, there is definately a degree of high camp and comedy to it all – it brings the whole event down to being a lark and a whole lot of fun.

today i met a bloke in his late 60′s – a local. his farm is about 20 k’s out of parkes and he has been a farmer all his life. when i met him, he was fully kitted out in elvis costume and enjoying beers with some locals and some tourists. i think it is fantastic this even exists.

this year, organisers are expecting a turnout of 15,000 people. the population of parkes is 15,000. this is great for the local economy.

on top of that, who would have thought that a 65+ year-old farmer from parkes would camp it up and have fun in a polyester elvis outfit? i think it’s fantastic that this event is there to pump money into the local economy and give local men, especially of this demographic, the chance to down tools, be silly and be someone else for a week and have fun.

it’s freedom of expression most country men don’t have the opportunity to enjoy. long live parkes elvis festival!

a little less conversation, a little more action – parkes elvis festival 2011

05.01.11 a little less conversation, a little more action parkes elvis festival 2011 it’s early days into the festival, but these two have locked on eyelines. a bit of spark? a little chemistry perhaps?

day one – parkes elvis festival 2011

05.01.111 day one parkes elvis festival 2011

day one. welcome to the elvis jungle. it’s 36 degrees centigrade and will probably get warmer.

not exactly the best climate to be wearing polyester vegas kit, but hey, what the hell. it’ll be interesting.

i have to admit that i’m not really a big elvis fan. hey, i appreciate his importance in the chronology and development of rock’n'roll and everything, and for sure he was important and infulencial, but i have to say that this crass little clip sums up my elvis experience. no apologies offered. it’s funny because it’s true.

Even if you can’t laugh at the little eddie murphy delerious ’80′s vid, i hope you enjoy traveling with me for the next few days.

on the highway – view from the passenger side

03.01.11 on the highway view from the passenger side

usually i am the sucker who is doing all the driving. it’s not a problem, i love doing long-distance driving.

it’s only when i’m in the passenger seat do i sometimes realise that i love being a passenger.

when being a passenger on the highway, i love to look into other peoples cars to see what is going on there. a car can be like a bubble. a world unto itself.

so i started to invade peoples privacy and shoot them as we flew past at 110 kmph.

here is one of the shots. a shame i never got a shot of the guy doing 120kmph, steering with his forearms and eating from his take-away container with a plastic fork while talking on the phone.

really.
