ahh yes, the good old hollywood hotel.
awesome p&o art deco pub, the venue of many a debauched and odd private party. i really love this place and am just waiting for the inevitable to happen – a takeover by the hemmes family, john ibrahim or john singleton.
it will be a sad day when that happens.
let’s see what comes of the excelsior in surry hills now that it has been taken over by hemmes…will he keep it as it is, or are we going to be looking at the ubiqitous glass and stainless steel? maybe in 10 years, when the area ‘cleans up’ a bit.

this is awesome. after taking the pic, i had a chat with the friendly guy who works there, it’s a family business, he is probably a grandson. he told me that the sign is 45 years old and he obviously loves it like i do (well probably more actually).
change is a good thing, but sometimes some things are better left unchanged.
although having said that, i really don’t want to be a bitch, but the interior needs a bit of a change. not an update, not anything fancy, but just some tlc.
love the sign though, don’t change it.

there is so much good stuff on the back lanes throughout this city. i would just love to see every back lane wall covered in art.

whaooh!!
what to make of this place…?
imagine a milk bar from the 1950′s stopped in time. they have run out of anything to sell and there are just two flouorescent lights on the glow. it’s post-apocalyptic stuff.
aside from the noise of the passing traffic outside, the place is silent.
no music, no nothing.
behind the counter is a greek guy in his late 70′s. he doesn’t want to chat. nothing.
the shelves are with dusty empty boxes that once housed confectionary.
his shop sells nothing, as far as i can tell, apart from a flavoured milkshake for $2.70.
you have to drink it there because he only sells it in those 1950′s aluminium milkshake holders.
this place is a trip.
drop in for a milkshake.

it’s funny, you know.
i have walked past this for years now and even though i am doing this blog, i have never thought to shoot it. i don’t know why..
it is a cracker of a little piece. stating the obvious, but in case you can’t tell, this is a security door by the side of a terrace house in fitzroy st, surry hills – opposite the cricketer’s arms. there is a door behind the security gate and this is painted on the door.
it’s awesome. a little disturbing maybe – and perhaps that’s why i never shot it.

oh nikki webster.
easy pickings i know, but some child stars really elicit an urge within me to punch them in the back of the head. the olsen twins, the fat kid from hey dad, justin bieber and yes, nikki webster.
she was just such a dick.
i suppose it would be really really quite hard to deal with that kind of attention at such a young age. there is probably also some kind of messed-up psychology going on there in which they will do anything to achieve fame.
“i’ll keep the money, you can have the fame’ as debbie harry once sang.
check out the apalling love affair nikki webster had with lad mags photoshoots. frightening stuff.
seems nikki webster has found her place and opened a humble dance studio on parramatta road. good luck to her, i kind of feel for her really.

how shit is that.

a nice little piece on kim jong ill.
apparently he is not actually a nutter, he is really quite sane. he is just an egotist and nihalist.
to see what is going on over in north korea, a great resource is dailynk.com – it really gives an insight into what is happening over there. i read it weekly. kim jong ill is a criminal and causes the daily suffering of 24 million koreans.
these people live in such a twisted form of reality. the chinese and south koreans fear that when (not if) the regime collapes, they will be flooded with 24 million under-educated zombies with huge drug problems (yes, they may not have food, but they have plenty of ice).
the sooner the US, UN and EU stop playing games with this monster and cut him off totally from foreign aid and food aid, the sooner this regime will collapse. yes it will be a big problem for south korea and china in the short-term, but it will also be a better long-term solution and expediate the raising of standard and quality of life for all those poor bastards who are trapped in the north.
now, for some light entertainment (from the film ‘team america’):

ok, things are clearly wrong here.
can’t the mum and dad see that they themselves are really obese – then can’t they think ‘hey something is wrong here, we need to change something so that our kid does not get so fat as well’?. hello type 2 diabetes.
just look at the size of that kid. he is massive. i bet as well that either he is a bully or is bullied at school. one or the other, no in-betweens – just because of how he looks.
maybe these guys just need to walk it out…….
i feel for him. he know no other way.
come on now, take some responsibility. i eat junk food and i smoke. i also have a kid who never sees me doing either of those things.
perhaps because of their upbringing, these people don’t actaully know any better.
it sure doesn’t help that you can pick up a loaf of bleached, sugary white bread for under $2, when a loaf of real, heavy, quality bread full of good stuff costs $7.
it’s so messed up.
maybe these guys need to make like richard simmons – and walk it out

try getting a photo of anything on parramatta road without getting a car in frame.
i did. am i proud of myself, yep, i sure am.
what are we looking at here? internationlist style architecture with some whacky bronze sculpture thingy on the front. a fascinator for a building perhaps, actually no, it’s more of a brooch.
this is another one of those things in sydney that i really hope stays the way that it is. please don’t update it.

any given space i suppose.
i guess the back of a signpost is a good spot to tag up – council won’t replace the sign, you are not really doing any damage and it is not going to get painted over. not a bad idea actually.

this place is an institution – especially for boozey business/corporate lunches (remember those?).
food – great and authentic mud crab and roti. good singapore style. delicious. have not tried anything else here.
service -apalling. arrogant, rude, slow and too much up-sell.
decor – in desperate need for an update.
price – a little bit over the top
verdict – try it once and make your own call. seems to be a little bit all over the shop, so things may be fantastic one night and shitful the next.

I don’t know who did this one, I didn’t see a tag or signature – maybe i didn’t look hard enough.
i love it, it’s a gem. if anyone knows who put this up, pls let me know i’d like to credit it.
this one can be found right behind pablos’ vice cafe.
go check it out.
