olympia milk bar stanmore

09.05.11 olympia milk bar stanmore

whaooh!!

what to make of this place…?

imagine a milk bar from the 1950′s stopped in time. they have run out of anything to sell and there are just two flouorescent lights on the glow. it’s post-apocalyptic stuff.

aside from the noise of the passing traffic outside, the place is silent.

no music, no nothing.

behind the counter is a greek guy in his late 70′s. he doesn’t want to chat. nothing.

the shelves are with dusty empty boxes that once housed confectionary.

his shop sells nothing, as far as i can tell, apart from a flavoured milkshake for $2.70.

you have to drink it there because he only sells it in those 1950′s aluminium milkshake holders.

this place is a trip.

drop in for a milkshake.

deceased estate

23.10.10 deceased estate

i feel a little bit sad most times i walk into a property that’s advertised as a ‘deceased estate’ – especially when there are cracks in the walls so wide, you can use them as a breakfast counter.

the places more often or not feel really lonely and sad and i always find myself wondering in which room did the person die in and were they alone?  how long did it take for the body to be found?

sometimes the places have very cool furniture though.

nice knowing you buddy

21.10.10 nice knowing you buddy

poor little fella, not the most dignified way to go out. but as i live in the concrete jungle, i’m not going to jackhammer up my pavers to bury him, nor will i toss him in the bin. it is thursday today and council won’t pick up my bins again until wednesday.

at least him will be in his element.

PS… since i mentioned living in the concrete jungle (even though it has nothing to do with koi carp), i have decided to add a little youtube clip on the end of this post.
‘welcome to the jungle’ – guns n roses – when they were at their glam-rock peak. when axl rose still had hair and before he hit the heroin too hard – hope you enjoy it as much as i do. so young, so gay, but fuck they were good. check it out:

tranquil afternoon along the banks of the scenic cooks river

22.05.10 tranquil afternoon along the banks of the scenic cooks river

jakarta, cairo, shanghai? no, it’s sydney.

the cooks ‘river’ is a 23 km long waterway that once was a freshwater river with abundant life.it flows into botany bay.

since the 1930′s, most of the banks were re-enforced with concrete and it served as a channel for industrial waste. it is one of the most toxic waterways in australia.

today, it serves as an outlet for some 100 sq km of sydney stormwater within its watershed.  some 400,000 people live in this area and i have to say that many of them appear to be pigs.

this is one photo of a 20m section on one bank. imagine what gets caught up up and down stream and what sinks to the bottom – the rest just washes out to sea. out of sight, out of mind, right?

many thanks to all the pigs who throw crap out the car window, to those who couldn’t be bothered to throw their rubbish in a bin, or take it with them, as well as those who are addicted to soft drinks, fast food and bottled water. thanks heaps. you know your children will only see plant and animal diversity in books and will die young from cancer because of you.

oh and btw, on the right of the image, no, it’s not mud that you can walk on. it’s a thick layer of oil and other crud floating on the surface of the water.

i actually saw people trying to fish here – man, how much do you hate your family to feed them your catch?

Why, Oh Why!?!?!?!

2.7.094 Why, Oh Why!?!?!?!

Why did it have to be this way? I came home today and found this little fella stiff as a board at the bottom of my aquarium. He seemed so happy just yesterday. What happened?

When I got him, he was only about 5cms long and today he died and was 22cms long. Poor thing. He was such a nice looking fish.

Forget Michael Jackson, today I grieve for my fish
