dickman – what is it with all the dicks popping up in sydney?

13.08.11 dickman what is it with all the dicks popping up in sydney?

seriously… there seems to be some cock fascination going on here in sydney of late.

yes, we have always competed with san fancisco in being the gayest city in the world, but it can not explain the sudden emergence of cocks popping up on walls all about town.

also, why are they ALWAYS circumcised dicks? easier to draw/spray? probably.

maybe i should start a politcal movement for uncircumicised men who are not represented in popular media.

maybe i can make it as important as the boat-people issue

dickman – you have got to love him. 4 dicks sprouting out of one head. what a dickhead.

the free market – an ‘art exhibition’ sells nothing – take what you want for free – awesome!

07.06.11 the free market an art exhibition sells nothing take what you want for free awesome!

i drop into the cofa kudos gallery, paddington quite regularly, but am spewing that i missed out on the opening night of this one.

this exhibition – ‘the free market’ – differs from any that i have seen – in large part because nothing is for sale, everything is given away – for free – and that exactly is the point. the art is not hanging on the wall, the art is in the idea.

i chatted with the artist – lauren carroll harris – and i really love and support her idea. i think there is the possibility of a worldwide movement for this type of thing.

she has been collecting stuff that people don’t want for a while – in our throw-away society, i don’t imagine that it would take too long either.

the gallery space was laid out a bit like a share-house – with a kitchen, living room, lots of furniture, bookshelves filled with books, a ton of cds donated by fbi radio, and triple j radio.

every day, the crew from bourke st bakery and sonoma bakery would deliver bread, sandwiches, pies, sausage rolls and bread rolls that would otherwise be thrown into the bin.

the idea was pretty much a free for all – what ever you see that you like, you are welcome to just take. lauren provided plenty of used plastic shopping bags to haul your loot of with.

ALL this stuff would have ended up in landfill if it was not for this project. Instead, people ate for free, took home free cd’s, got free furniture, books, pots, pans, toys, appliances, posters, you name it, it was there for the taking.

my photo does not do it justice, as the exhibition opened a week ago – attracting over 300 people. not bad for a neighboorhood gallery. The place was wiped out of the best stuff on the first night, but i at least managed to pick up a few good books and two pieces of absolute shit – one of which i will photograph in a week or so and have a big menacing rant about. stay posted.

great work! i just hope that most of the people who walked away with your free stuff also walked away understanding your message.

i was a ditz and left your email behind, shoot me a message if you want me to post blog or contact details for you on here.

plastic drinking cup art & the great pacific ocean garbage patch

16.12.10 plastic drinking cup art & the great pacific ocean garbage patch

plastic drinks cups stuck into a wire cyclone fence on south dowling street. “et phone up” am pretty sure this is no longer paddington, but is it darlinghurst, or is it surry hills here?

i really love this kind of street art and it reminds me a lot of pixel art.

i’m in a bit of bother however. as much as i am glad the council workers don’t ‘destroy the art’, my concern is that all of this plastic ends up being washed down the drains and into the sea at some point in time – and that is a concern.

certainly you have all by now heard of the pacific ocean garbage patch. click the link if you havn’t. it’s well worth a read.

so then…. garbage or art?

here is a link to more plastic cup art on this site.

29.08.10 free avocados in paddington! got to love it

these bad boys cost $3 a piece in the supermarkets now.

great to see it when someone puts the thought and effort into doing something like this, rather than just watch the fruit drop and rot – especially in an affluent part of town.

good on you!

i took two and they were great – thank you!

very bad marketing and PR example care of bodum

01.06.10 very bad marketing and PR example care of bodum

what’s going on here?

see the white thing in front of the bus? it’s a buggy/people carrier/chariot/ pedal-powered tuk-tuk type thing, put on the road by bodum and pedalling UP the hill on oxford street, darlinghurst on the tail end of peak hour.

it could be a great idea, (perhaps in a city which is flat and doesn’t have massive congestion issues like sydney) but…… whoever came up with this idea deserves a good slap at least, or lose their job at worst.

whoever at bodum signed off on this and paid for it definitively needs a reality check and a good kick in the ass.

so the brief is that there is some funky looking pedal-powered people-mover trawling up oxford st, offering free rides to all the girls. yaay! that sounds great. it looks different and that means it will attract the attention of cashed up professionals and gay guys walking the strip. how wrong.

apart from the fact that sydney-siders are pretty unaccustomed to this thing (making the bike guys come across as being a bit creepy), i managed to walk up the hill at the same speed as this guy pedaled.

now granted that i take a longer stride than most, i don’t slow down a bus which carries more than 20 people home.

see the guy on the bike wearing a high-vis vest? he is OVERTAKING the bus and will soon overtake the bodum-badly-thought-out-dickhead-mobile.

a hummer driver in sydney thinks that when people are trying to get a look at him through his tinted windows, they all want to know who he is and wants to roll with him. wrong. the majority wants to see what kind of a fuckwit with a tiny cheesedick drives that car.

same thing for the bodum chariot crew – the main reason that people stare, is that they want to know who is holding the 30 people on a bus from getting home in time. PR FAIL! big time.

my personal message to the people involved at bodum australia is this…. if you have cankles, i have the cure.

is this art or vandalism?

06.05.10 is this art or vandalism?

if you have been following this blog for a little while, you will have noticed that i am quite liberal on most things – particularly on anything artsy fartsy.

it breaks my heart when i see a good piece or throw-up on the rail lines being covered over with the ubiquitous brown paint that RailCorp so loves to use. It also bothered me when philjames emailed me to tell me that some of the work that he did that i photographed, had been ripped off the walls, leaving behind nothing more than ugly scars.

i have to say though, what is in this photo of the day is completely crap. it’s most likely the work of some dipshit COFA student trying to be profound. i think that this is crap for the following reasons:

1)your ‘art’  is just complete crap – total smega garbage and it says NOTHING;

2) it can’t be painted over or removed without doing more damage to a tree that has been there for over 100 year than what you have already done. Keep in mind, this is in a densely populated area, where it’s unlikely mature trees will be replaced at all.;

3) total disrespect for nature and neighbourhood (in which he/she probably studies in and is desperate to be accepted into);

4) whoever did this, you are a total cock who needs a good slap – get the fuck out of my neighborhood!

do you love your take-away coffees?

03.04.10 do you love your take away coffees?

seems at the end of the day at paddington markets, plenty of other people do too.

what fills up this bin more than anything is take-away coffee cups and plastic drink bottles. it’s one bin, on one day, and one which is emptied regularly.

it’s a little bit of a worry what we are doing to our planet, but hey, it’s convenient isn’t it?

i’m not so sure those in the marketing department have thought this one through properly.

i’m HOT – so go stick it where it hurts!

22.09.09 im HOT so go stick it where it hurts!

there are some days that i walk down the street and think -’hey, i really LOVE living where i live’.  for me, today was one of those days. apart from the usual market day, today was a little bit special around here. as part of the fashion week hooplas, there was a street closure and mini-festival on William Street to promote local business.

may i introduce to you,  ‘Lady Elektra’… click here for a baby photo of her.

but i must tread carefully, with arms and shoulders like that, i’m sure she may well punch the crap out of me.

yet more guerilla art

24.7.09 yet more guerilla art

Okay then, will the real Phil James please stand up, please stand up?

For those of you who are regulars here, you would have already seen this post. Here is another piece found in Paddington.

Whoever this guy is, he really likes to see a mashed-up Princess Diana as you can see here, posted by a Kate Bedwell (nice name BTW, do you?).

Dumbo Feather has also mentioned him here, as has Darlinghurst Nights.

Someone called Reemski has posted this on her Flickr account as well.

I really hope this is not some clever viral marketing campaign that has us hoodwinked and that rather, it is a homegrown Banksy-type thing.

If it IS a marketing thing, I vow to take down all posts regarding this and replace them with something else i shot that day. You know I DO take more than one photo a day.

If anyone finds more of this guys work, please put your links into my comments.

PS. – Haberdashery – what an excellent word.

concrete guerilla art

22.7.09 concrete guerilla art

I have noticed over the past few weeks these things appearing on Oxford Street.

Someone has made these pre-fabs (out of concrete?). There are TV and video remote controls, as well as one Nokia phone. Seems that they have poured the concrete into the mould, buttons and all and have scratched messages into them. The detail is amazing. They have been stuck onto brick walls with liquid nails or something.

One of them, a TV remote, is enscribed with the word “Isolation”. I like it. Here is another.

i also found a concrete computer.

I would love to know if anyone else here has seen these things and if anyone knows who is doing it?

My message to the perp is this – “Thank You!” – I hope the Saturday shoppers get your message.
