driving down the m3, near mamre road

15.12.11 driving down the m3, near mamre road

pretty quiet on the road today. thanking the freaky being in the sky for that one.

just a shot of high-voltage, high tensile electrical cable running over the highway.

just be sure you don’t live under that stuff, you may get free electricity, but you may also get some whacky cancer.

rip mick

10.10.11 rip mick

i was driving down the m3 and my transport shat itself.

my wheels died right at this spot- near the turnoff for penrith, right before the nepean river.

i love motorbikes – riding them gives you such a sense of freedom. i like to think that i am a good rider, but anything can happen.

i don’t know mick, or any of his mates. i don’t know how mick died – was he being a nutter, on the piss, or just riding home from work?

seems that some 2 years have passed since this guy died at this turn-off, his gloves and helmet are still there and i hope they stay.

if micks little shrine can avert the death or injury of even one person,  his death has helped someone else.

mick, i have never met you – even if we have had met, i guess we would probably not get along – rip buddy. if your death can avert the death or suffering of a few others, then you know that you did not die without cause.

driving into the sun -> aghh! my retinas are on fire! (oh and a rant on fake compo claims)

25.06.11 driving into the sun > aghh! my retinas are on fire! (oh and a rant on fake compo claims)i kid you not.

i have deliberately not retouched this photo at all. what you see is exactly what i saw.

for anyone who has driven from south to north along the bradfield highway in the late afternoon, you understand this photo completely. that is the sun blazing into my eyes underneath that bridge. hell, i reckon i captured solar flares in that shot.

since we australians live in a complete nanny state and seem to not take on any personal responsibility, i propose that we build enormous retractible sunshades made of some kind of polarising material. they can be suspended by zeppelins hovering over the city in the afternoon when the westerly sun is so strong.

though we are not (yet) as letigious as our friends over in the usa, maybe we need to find some ways to wrap our population in cottonwool better. spoonfeed them with transfats and provide a rudd/gillard economic stimulous package – one that provides anyone who has a kid with free headrest lcd dvd/gaming console in every family car on the australian road – just to keep the kids entertained for the 20 minute drive home from school.

furthermore, the state should provide commuters with rubber bumpers all around their vehicles so in case of collision, cars simply bounce off eachother – like dodgem cars.

if my pinky finger should get strained in such a collission, i should automatically be entilted to a modest compensation payment of 11 million dollars.

you think i am joking? read this story of .telstra worker dale hargreaves and her compo payout.

next time you can’t work from home, next time you see your insurance premium goes up, next time that you suddenly see there is more legislation and red tape in between you and getting your job done, you can thank the likes of dale hargreaves (who may well have been on the sauce when her accidents happened). fuck you dale hargreaves and everyone like you – you have just fucked it all up and made it that little bit harder for all the rest of us. may a real accident find you soon.

st kilda rd, melbourne – through a tram-stop sign

15.06.11 st kilda rd, melbourne through a tram stop sign

i took this pic through the cut-out section of the signs at the tram stops in melbourne. this is on st kilda road, just near elwood. nice blue sky, no traffic on the road.

i love how i can get from elwood to fitzroy in less than 30 mins. to cover the same distance would take me an hour in sydney – and that is if my bus or train came on time.

if i miss a tram in melbourne, it’s no big deal, i may have to wait 5 to 10 mins for the next to arrive. if i miss my bus in sydney, i can be looking at about 1/2 an hour. what a disgrace.

sydney, like los angeles, once had a sprawling network of light rail that was cheap, efficient and popular.

mostly in the post-war years, when there was a greater standard of living and higher disposable income, peopel started to buy cars. the roads were soon full of cars and most of the drivers on the road were pretty incopetent through lack of experience.

lots of cars in sydney were crashing into trams, eachother and pedestrians. the government of the time and the nrma decided that trams were dangerous, not cars! So with the support of the nrma, oil companies and rubber companies, all of the tram tracks were torn up.

to just get a little idea of how established and comprehensive the tram network in sydney used to be, just google ‘wiki trams in sydney’ and see for yourself.

if you are a sydneysider, just try to imagine how convenient and awesome that tram network would be if we still had it today.

on the highway – view from the passenger side

03.01.11 on the highway view from the passenger side

usually i am the sucker who is doing all the driving. it’s not a problem, i love doing long-distance driving.

it’s only when i’m in the passenger seat do i sometimes realise that i love being a passenger.

when being a passenger on the highway, i love to look into other peoples cars to see what is going on there. a car can be like a bubble. a world unto itself.

so i started to invade peoples privacy and shoot them as we flew past at 110 kmph.

here is one of the shots. a shame i never got a shot of the guy doing 120kmph, steering with his forearms and eating from his take-away container with a plastic fork while talking on the phone.

really.

18.07.10 ummm, wouldnt even think about it

do you really need a sign to tell you that you shouldn’t cycle where fuel tankers are doing 90 km/ph?

i don’t know how cyclists do it in sydney – drivers are impatient, aggressive and intolerant. although there’s no culture of bicycles or motorbikes in sydney, give me a motorcycle anyday, at least i’m heard and can pull out of a situation quickly.

obviously not one of the city of sydney’s awesome new cycleway network.

when the buses go to sleep

11.07.101 when the buses go to sleep

the waverley bus depot at night.

i have a lot of respect for bus drivers, i really do.

think about it for a moment. they need to navigate the horrendous sydney traffic all shift, as well as deal with some pretty crappy, demeaning and abusive characters day in, day out. they are also responsible for, literally, a busload of people.

i have had my own fair share of grumpy, rude, even psycho bus drivers, but i tell you, almost every time, i will get off the bus at the front door so i can say to them ‘thank you’.

you should do it too.

federal park in annandale – a top spot

17.06.10 federal park in annandale a top spot

perfect place to relax, by rozelle bay. in this shot is the light rail line – something i would love to see extended.

sydney used to have one of the biggest tram services in all the world, second only to london. thanks to the nsw labor party (seems 50 years doesn’t change much as far as public transport strategy for sydney goes) and the nrma, which had a vested interest in forcing more people to drive, the system was wound down during the 1950′s and eventually closed in 1961.

i’m sure more than a few individuals lined their pockets with gold in making this shady deal – to the detriment of a burgeoning population of sydneysiders with a sub-standard provision of public transport infrastructure.

very bad marketing and PR example care of bodum

01.06.10 very bad marketing and PR example care of bodum

what’s going on here?

see the white thing in front of the bus? it’s a buggy/people carrier/chariot/ pedal-powered tuk-tuk type thing, put on the road by bodum and pedalling UP the hill on oxford street, darlinghurst on the tail end of peak hour.

it could be a great idea, (perhaps in a city which is flat and doesn’t have massive congestion issues like sydney) but…… whoever came up with this idea deserves a good slap at least, or lose their job at worst.

whoever at bodum signed off on this and paid for it definitively needs a reality check and a good kick in the ass.

so the brief is that there is some funky looking pedal-powered people-mover trawling up oxford st, offering free rides to all the girls. yaay! that sounds great. it looks different and that means it will attract the attention of cashed up professionals and gay guys walking the strip. how wrong.

apart from the fact that sydney-siders are pretty unaccustomed to this thing (making the bike guys come across as being a bit creepy), i managed to walk up the hill at the same speed as this guy pedaled.

now granted that i take a longer stride than most, i don’t slow down a bus which carries more than 20 people home.

see the guy on the bike wearing a high-vis vest? he is OVERTAKING the bus and will soon overtake the bodum-badly-thought-out-dickhead-mobile.

a hummer driver in sydney thinks that when people are trying to get a look at him through his tinted windows, they all want to know who he is and wants to roll with him. wrong. the majority wants to see what kind of a fuckwit with a tiny cheesedick drives that car.

same thing for the bodum chariot crew – the main reason that people stare, is that they want to know who is holding the 30 people on a bus from getting home in time. PR FAIL! big time.

my personal message to the people involved at bodum australia is this…. if you have cankles, i have the cure.

spectacular sydney sunset

16.7.09 spectacular sydney sunset

Unfortunately, this is about the closest I got to enjoying that magnificent sunset today – mostly thanks to being trapped in traffic in the Harbour Tunnel.

Am utterly devastated, I was hoping to get to the beach or at least the Harbour foreshore to enjoy it.

Good luck to everyone who got a chance to really take it in – it really was something special.
